Vista SP1 Volume Activation 2.0 Resources Available for Download

The introduction of Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista marked the evolution of various aspects of the Windows client with some reverberating all the way to Windows Server 2008 RTM/SP1. As far as changes to the anti-piracy mitigations set in place are concerned, Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1 both share not only the absent Reduced Functionality Mode (which has made it into Windows 7 Milestone 1), but also the evolution of Volume Activation 2.0. Microsoft made available the Volume Activation 2.0 Technical Guidance for Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 in the past, but at the end of the past week, the resources were republished to the Download
Center.

Customers will be able to access documentation focused on the deployment, the operations, the resources available along with the technical attributes, but also information about planning, about the Volume Product Key Groups, and overview and a FAQ of Volume Activation 2.0, as it is now with the latest versions of the Windows client and server operating systems. Introducing the Windows Vista Compatibility Center

At the Worldwide Partner Conference 2008 on July 8, in Huston, Texas, Brad Brooks, corporate vice president, Windows Consumer Product Marketing, announced that Microsoft was going to go live with the Windows Vista Compatibility Center. It is clear that the Redmond company is fighting the bad aura that is clinching to its latest Windows client even after the release of Service Pack 1. For the past year and a half, software and hardware compatibility with Vista was improved constantly, but without palpable evidences of the evolution,
consumers' perception remains unaffected.

"To help bust the myth that Windows Vista is not compatible with your software or devices, we're announcing a new Web site called the Windows Vista Compatibility Center. It's a way for any customer, a consumer or a business, to go to a very simple, easy to use Web site, and see all of the devices and all the applications that are compatible with Windows Vista," Brooks explained.

Vista SP1 Release Follows XP SP3 to WSUS

Microsoft is closing in on the final stage of Windows Vista SP1's availability. In this context, the service pack is being wrapped up for delivery through Windows Server Update Services. Windows Vista
SP1 was released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008, and to the general public on March 18. In addition, the automatic distribution of Vista SP1 debuted on April 23. Ahead the gold bits of the service pack being served through Automatic Updates, the company also published Vista SP1 on the Microsoft Update catalog on March 25, from where WSUS users could grab them. Now the software giant is preparing to make Vista SP1 RTM available through WSUS.

But before that, users running WSUS on Windows 2003 servers are advised to deploy the WinVerifyTrust update. Without it, servers in the scenarios described above will continually re-download Vista SP1 binaries once the service pack has been approved.

Vista SP1 Installed System Memory RAM

One of the aspects that Service Pack 1 changes for Windows Vista is the way that the operating system reports the amount of installed system memory. The way that
Vista SP1 now deals with the physical RAM impacts both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the platform and end users could experience an increase of the memory value reported. According to Microsoft, in the eventuality that physical memory was reserved for the graphics card, or if additional peripherals share the RAM via settings in the system BIOS, and also on computers with more than 3 GB of system memory, Vista SP1 will report the full resources available.

"This change occurs because Windows Vista with SP1 reports how much physical memory installed on your computer. All versions of Windows NT-based operating systems before Windows Vista Service SP1 report how much memory available to the operating system. This change in Windows Vista SP1 is a reporting change only," Microsoft informed.

Microsoft updates Windows Vista search to version 4.0

The built-in search feature of Windows Vista is no match for the Spotlight search feature of Mac OSX which is unobtrusive when indexing, fast to find your files right off the bat and just smarter. Microsoft is playing catch-up with its search feature and with the latest update may just be getting there.

Windows Search 4.0 is available for almost every modern 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows including Vista with SP1, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003, Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2008. The update is not available via Windows Update and must be downloaded manually from Microsoft.

The search isn’t necessarily any smarter and in that respect is no match for Spotlight but there are a couple new features worth noting. According to ZDnet, Windows Search 4.0 improves indexing speed and support for indexing encrypted files has been added. It also supports indexing files on networked computers and drives.It seems in order for this to work on Vista, SP1 must be installed. Top 6 Vista Application Incompatibility Reasons

Application incompatibility is one of the aspects that have managed to deliver extensive damage to the adoption rate of Windows Vista. However, as Vista matured throughout 2007 and with Service Pack 1 in 2008, so did the ecosystem of software solutions orbiting around the operating system.
