Expiration dates for Vista SP1 and XP SP3 blocks announced

If you’re an IT professional and currently using Microsoft’s Service Pack Blocker, the software giant recently announced that the current blocks for Vista SP1 and XP SP3 are going to expire in a few months. The Service Pack Blocker Tool only temporarily prevents Windows from the installation of a Service Pack via Windows Update, and the block is only effective for one year after the Service pack is released to the market via Windows Update.

Effective April 28th, 2009, Windows Vista SP1 will no longer be blocked by the tool and will be delivered via Windows Update. The same goes for Windows XP SP3, but the block will be lifted on May 19th, 2009.

These dates correspond with the official release and distribution of the Service Packs through Windows Update. Microsoft Windows Communications Manager, Brandon LeBlanc, also released a QnA for users who are concerned about the announcement:

Q: What does this mean if my company has the tool in place?

A: Enterprises currently using the service pack blocker tool for either Windows Vista SP1 or Windows XP SP3 will be prompted to install Windows Vista SP1 or Windows XP SP3 as appropriate. Microsoft recognizes the need for IT pros to have this type of information in advance and wants to provide them with an early heads-up to ensure they’re prepared to deploy the appropriate service pack(s) when the blockers expire.

Q: Is there a separate blocker tool available if we don’t want to deploy Windows Vista SP1 or Windows XP SP3?

A: No. Microsoft strongly recommends all customers move to Windows Vista SP1 if they are running Windows Vista or Windows XP SP3 if they are running Windows XP. Our goal in announcing the removal of the blockers early is to provide you with an early notification to ensure you’re prepared to deploy the appropriate service pack when the blockers expire.

Q: Does this mean we have to download Windows Vista SP1 or Windows XP SP3?

A: No. Service packs will not automatically install on a machine even after the Service Pack Blocker tool expires. For service packs, you must accept the offering before installation will start. If Automatic Update is turned on, WU will alert you that it has an important update to install. If you don’t want to install the update (service pack), simply decline to install and/or hide the update. If you do not have AU turned on, the service pack will not be offered until you open Windows Update and “Check for Updates.”

Q: Does this signify the end of support for Windows Vista and/ or Windows XP SP2?

A: No. For more information on Windows product support lifecycles, please visit the following site:

Norton 2008 Fix for Windows Vista SP1 and XP3

When you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1, a tool that is called Fixccs.exe adds numerous registry keys in many locations (some of them within the Symantec registry keys) but is unable to remove them. Because of these registry keys, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
* Windows Device Manager is empty
* Missing Wireless network adaptors or other hardware devices
* Unable to connect using a wireless adapter
If you have already installed XP SP3 or Vista SP1 Symantec has developed a tool to remove the registry entries that were added during the Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista SP 1 upgrade.
For Norton 2008 subscribers who have not yet installed the service packs, install Symantec's LiveUpdate solution first. This prevents the issues from occurring. Ensure that you run LiveUpdate and restart your computer before installing the Service Pack.

Fix Black Screen of Death for XP SP3 and Vista SP1 Upgrades

Microsoft has warned end users that performing Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 upgrades from copies of XP SP2 and Vista RTM, respectively, that have Onekey Recovery 5.0 installed will cause the operating systems to display a black screen following reboot. According to the Redmond company, the issue is generated by an incompatibility between the two service pack releases and Saming OneKey recovery software driver Safnt.sys.
This means that deploying SP1 on top of Vista RTM, or SP3 on top of XP SP2, with Onekey Recovery 5.0 also installed, will result in a black screen of death. Microsoft revealed that this scenario would happen whether the service pack upgrade is performed from Windows Update or through any other method. "This issue occurs when the computer contains Onekey recovery software that is earlier than version 5.1. If the computer uses the Onekey recovery software version 5.1 or later versions, this issue does not occur," the company revealed, explaining that "Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP2 are incompatible with Onekey Recovery 5.0."
Users affected by the problem can access updates from Microsoft that will help them deal with the incompatibility. There are releases available for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista RTM and SP1, and only for the x86 variants of XP SP2 and SP3. Additionally, the software giant explained that in order "to avoid this issue, use one of the following methods: use the Windows Update Web site to install the hotfix before you upgrade the operating system or upgrade to the newer one-key recovery application before you upgrade the operating system."

The updates are available for download via the links below:

Vista SP1 Volume Activation 2.0 Resources Available for Download

The introduction of Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista marked the evolution of various aspects of the Windows client with some reverberating all the way to Windows Server 2008 RTM/SP1. As far as changes to the anti-piracy mitigations set in place are concerned, Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1 both share not only the absent Reduced Functionality Mode (which has made it into Windows 7 Milestone 1), but also the evolution of Volume Activation 2.0. Microsoft made available the Volume Activation 2.0 Technical Guidance for Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 in the past, but at the end of the past week, the resources were republished to the Download
Center.

Customers will be able to access documentation focused on the deployment, the operations, the resources available along with the technical attributes, but also information about planning, about the Volume Product Key Groups, and overview and a FAQ of Volume Activation 2.0, as it is now with the latest versions of the Windows client and server operating systems. Of course, Microsoft is highlighting the changes delivered to Volume Activation 2.0 in Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 compared with what was available in the RTM edition of Windows Vista.

The process of obtaining volume license product keys for the two platforms is unchanged, but the Redmond company did introduce changes to KMS Activation Threshold and the way in which KMS hosting is performed. However, the most notable modification comes from the synchronization of Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 in terms of the Reduced Functionality Mode. The latest Windows client and server operating systems now feature similar behavior to Windows XP.

"Microsoft introduced a new notifications-based experience with Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 to differentiate between a genuine and activated copy of Windows and one that is not, and does so in a way that maintains system functionality such as logon, access to the familiar desktop, etc. Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM) has been removed from Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 and replaced with a notifications-based experience. If Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 systems are not activated within the Initial Grace period or an Out of Tolerance Grace period, persistent notifications will alert users of the need to activate," the company revealed.
