Secret Crush to Crash Your Computer

A new Facebook application brings the popular social networking service back in the spotlight, as it attempts to take users on a dangerous website and deploy malicious files on their computers. ¡®Secret Crush¡¯ is a Facebook application claiming that it is able to disclose the friend¡¯s name that has a ¡°secret crush¡± for a certain registered member. The application requires Facebook members to invite five other friends to use it, but instead of revealing the secret admirer, ¡®Secret Crush¡¯ takes the users to a malicious website attempting to drop an infection.

One of the infections has been identified as MyWebSearch, a computer threat that displays unwanted pop-up adverts on all the affected computers. (more¡¦)

Firefox 3 Testing Begins

The next version of Mozilla Firefox, codenamed Gran Paradiso, but better known as Firefox 3 is now entering the final phase of testing with the release of the Beta 1 software It•âs still a bit early for everyday use but developers and geeks are welcome to give it a test run, and help Mozilla iron out any remaining bugs. It has lots of interesting new features, including Information about the site you are visiting just click on the site•âs ‘Favicon•â (the little icon that appears on the address bar, it has beefed up malware protection, better all round security, integration with anti-virus software (it alerts your AV program if it detects anything suspicious in a download), and there•âs a ‘resume•â download feature if your connection is interrupted for any reason. Password management has been simplified, the useful Find toolbar now opens automatically and early reports suggest that it is faster and more stable than its predecessors and barring any last minute disasters the finished version is on course for release early next year.

Microsoft Just a Spectator at Mozilla•âs Firefox Spectacle

Microsoft is nothing more than a simple spectator at Mozilla¡¯s Firefox spectacle of releases. A new version of the open source browser is now available for download. Mozilla has delivered Firefox 2.0.0.10, a stability update announced as early as last week. Firefox 2.0.0.10 can be grabbed immediately via this link, but Mozilla will also serve the refresh via its update infrastructure, and in this sense, users will be alerted of the new build. With this release, Mozilla has plugged three security holes in the browser. A referer-spoofing via window.location race condition flaw, jar: URI scheme XSS hazard, and holes involving memory corruption are the vulnerabilities fixed with Firefox 2.0.0.10.

¡°As part of Mozilla Corporation•âs ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 2.0.0.10 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download. (more¡¦)

Using Gmail to Filter Spam On Existing Mail Accounts

Spam sucks. We all know that. The question is how to stop it. Those of us who use Google•âs Gmail have very little spam problem. Google•âs spam filtering is VERY good. When I was using Outlook as my mail client, I was using the paid Cloudmark plug-in to defeat spam. It beats the hell out of the built-in spam filtering on ANY mail client. But, since moving to Gmail, my spam problem has been even less than with Cloudmark. And I don•ât have to spend a dime for it.

But, what if you don•ât want to use a gmail.com email address? Perhaps you are using an address tied to your own domain name or from your ISP. You might not want to switch. Well, I have good news and no, it doesn•ât have to do with my car insurance. But, I did save a boatload of money on my spam problem by switching to Gmail. And I didn•ât have to change my email address. (more¡¦)
