De Types van dossier
Dit lusje bevat een lijst van alle dossiertypes die de Vensters ongeveer weet en die de programma's worden gevormd om hen te openen als u op hun pictogrammen tweemaal klikt.


Zoals het beeld toont, als een .doc document op het zal openen in MS Word tweemaal wordt geklikt. U kunt het programma veranderen dat met een dossiertype door zijn ingang te selecteren en de „Verandering te drukken…“ wordt geassoci�ërd knoop.

Nu en dan zou u dossiertypes van de lijst kunnen willen schrappen, als u geen dossiers van een bepaald type meer gebruikt. Benadruk de ingang voor het dossiertype en druk de knoop van de „Schrapping“. Dit zal de grootte van verminderen Registratie (een dossier dat de meeste montages voor Vensters en andere toepassingen) bevat, maar niet door genoeg om een significante invloed op prestaties te hebben. Zo, zijn de kansen dat u waarschijnlijk deze lijst zult willen alleen verlaten.

Er is een optie om een nieuw dossiertype voor de lijst tot stand te brengen, die de „Nieuwe“ knoop gebruikt, maar eerlijk gezegd, bent u beter van enkel het tweemaal klikken op…

Huid beschermde werkend (Geadviseerde) systeemdossiers
Deze optie wordt geselecteerd door gebrek, om gebruikers tegen zich te beschermen, zoals in het waarschuwingsbericht wordt verklaard dat verschijnt als u probeert om het af te zetten.


Als u „ja“ op deze dialoogdoos klikt zult u deze speciale systeemdossiers kunnen zien. Het beeld toont hieronder diverse systeemdossiers die door Vensters om worden vereist te lopen, zoals „pagefile“ die het ruilmiddeldossier is dat de gebruikers van Vensters om geheugen te beheren. Zoals het plaatsen voorstelt, zullen de meeste gebruikers deze optie geselecteerd willen verlaten.

Dit het plaatsen, indien geselecteerd, verandert de manier dat de Vensters verschillende instanties van in werking stelt Ontdekkingsreiziger door hen in afzonderlijke processen in werking te stellen, zodat als men verplettert zouden anderen moeten blijven lopend. U kunt dit willen selecteren maar volgens gebruikerservaring schijnt het om weinig verschil te maken.

View Settings
The 'View' tab has two sections. In the first section, 'Folder Views' you can either set Explorer to show all folders according to the current settings using the 'Apply to All Folders' button; or, by clicking the 'Reset All Folders' button, Explorer can be set to display folders as they were when Windows was first installed - this excludes any changes made to the toolbars.


The second section has a number of 'Advanced settings' to change the look and the behaviour of Explorer.


Automatically search for network folders and printer
If this setting is selected Explorer will hunt round the local network for any shared folders or printers. The effects of this setting will be negligible for home users or anyone who is not on a large local area network within a company or other organisation.


Display the size information in folder tips
If this setting is ticked, Explorer will show the size of the contents of a folder if you hover the mouse over it. As shown in this picture:

In the 'Tools' menu of any Explorer window there is a 'Folder Options' item. This opens a dialog box that enables us to change the behaviour and the look of Explorer windows. This series of articles explore these various settings. The first part will deal with the 'General' tab.

General Settings
The 'General' page has three settings, and a 'Restore Defaults' button that you can press to return to Windows' original settings.


Tasks
The first setting, 'Tasks', can be used to either show or hide the left hand pane in Explorer windows. The default setting - 'Show common tasks in folders' -will make Explorer windows look like this:

What is an Operating System?

An operating system, or OS, is software that enables you to operate the computer. It manages the opening of files, the monitor display, printing, access to networks, and so on. The chances are you are using a version of Windows as your operating system, but this is not the only OS available. Others include the various versions of linux (such as Ubuntu) which are generally available for free, and OSX, which is the latest operating system for Apple Macs. The various operating systems will tend to look different from one another, they will store files in different ways, and will also run different programs. So, a program written for Windows will not work on Linux unless it is run through an emulator or another piece of software that acts like a translator, such as WINE.

When you are using Windows Explorer - the file management program that opens when you double-click on ‘My Computer’ and the like - you can move to the parent folder by clicking the back-space key.

By ‘parent folder’ I mean the folder that contains the one you are looking at. In the following image we see that the ‘parent folder’ of Adobe is Program Files.

Another way to achieve the same thing is to press the F4 key followed by the up arrow, and then Return.

Note for Vista users: using the Backspace key in Vista mimics the use in web browsers, that is, it takes you to the previous folder you looked at. To go to the parent directory using Vista, hold down Alt and press the Up cursor.
