The objects are linked together, and arranged in a reasonable layout that you can later interactively work withthe objects in Microsoft Office Visio.

Windows Explorer and SMB Traffic

Server Message Block (SMB) traffic is an application-level network protocol typically used for file and print sharing. Microsoft implements SMB in Windows operating systems through the Workstation and Server services; the client and server components respectively. Although our Networking team supports and troubleshoots issues dealing with SMB itself and the Server and Workstation services, we work with customers on many issues relating to the behavior of Windows Explorer and the Shell.

By default, Windows Explorer generates a lot of SMB traffic - which can result in poor file server performance in some circumstances. However, some of this traffic is superfluous and can be reduced - for example:

  • Searches for Desktop.ini files used for folder customization
  • Periodic refreshes of folder contents
  • Searches for supporting library (.dll) files
  • Individual file details and attributes pulled for each file
  • Thumbnail extraction

There are some registry changes you can implement to optimize the SMB traffic being generated. Import the settings below on client machines. Terminal Servers running in Application Mode should be considered client machines in this scenario.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]

Not all of these settings apply to every Windows Operating System, however any unused settings will be safely ignored by the OS. Also, please ensure that you test any changes thoroughly make sure that user productivity is not impacted before rolling out these changes en masse. You should also ensure that the client

Group Policy Diagnostic Best Practice Analyzer

Microsoft just released a free Group Policy best practices analyzer. The Microsoft Group Policy Diagnostic Best Practice Analyzer (GPDBPA) is designed to help you identify Group Policy configuration errors that may prevent policy settings from being applied as expected or may prevent features from functioning as expected.
The GPDBPA can provide information to help you respond to situations such as:

  • Policy settings are not being applied as expected
  • A feature is not functioning as expected. (For example, a mapped drive is not visible on client computers.)

A computer has:

  • Stopped responding during logon or startup.
  • Restarted during logon or startup.
  • Experienced delays during logon or startup.

You need to determine whether:

  • Policy settings are configured in a way that poses a security risk.
  • Necessary services are running.
  • You are connecting over a slow link.
  • Loopback mode is in effect.
  • Using the GPDBPA, you can scan the Group Policy configuration on either a client computer (managed node) or domain controller, and view a report of potential issues. Additionally, you can schedule a scan to run at a future time, or schedule scans to run on a recurring basis.

You Can Request Hotfixes Via The Web

You can now request a hotfix via the hotfix request web submission form:

https://support.microsoft.com/contactus2/emailcontact.aspx?scid=sw;en;1410&WS=hotfix

The form on the site has field entries for the following information:

Country/Region
KB article number
Platform

Product Language
E-mail address

Just fill out the appropriate fields and the hotfix will automatically be emailed to you at the address you specify. Now you no longer have to open a support case (even if it was free) simply to request a hotfix. How great is that?

New Microsoft Update Catalog

For those of you who have been looking for one place to download content from Microsoft Update and Windows Update, this is the place. Content available includes security updates, drivers, and much more. For all the items you want to download, place them in the download cart and download them in one big batch.

For security updates, the web site will download the needed MSU file that you can import into BDD 2007 Workbench (Finally a place to get them). For drivers, it will download a CAB file containing the needed driver files, so you'll first need to extract the contents of the CAB file before you can import them into Workbench.

Some key features of the MU Catalog include:

  • Full-text search: You can search using a keyword, KB article, MSRC bulletin, driver manufacturer, driver model, driver version, product, and/or classification.
  • RSS: Save your searches in RSS and get notified when new updates match your criteria.
  • Download with BITS: Uses BITS to make the download experience robust and efficient.
  • “Shopping basket”: You can select multiple updates (and multiple languages) and download them together.
  • Integration with WSUS: You can import updates from your basket into Windows Server Update Services 3.0, System Center Essentials 2007 or System Center Configuration Manager 2007.
  • Localization: The Catalog is localized in all core Windows Vista languages.

You can find the new Update Catalog at this link: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx
