New Updates to Windows Vista available via Windows Update this week

As you probably know and as we’ve mentioned in previous posts, we use Windows Update to periodically deliver updates for Windows Vista. We do this so that customers need not wait for a service pack or another or larger release to benefit from the ongoing improvements we make to Windows. With Windows Update, we can regularly service Windows as quickly, effectively and unobtrusively as possible, so that keeping your Windows OS up-to-date is easier and more convenient for you. All you have to do is make sure you are signed up to have updates installed automatically, and you’re good to go. Continuous improvement is the name of this game.

The non-security updates planned for release through Windows Update this week include:

  • An update on system compatibility, reliability and stability: extends the battery life for mobile devices, improves stability of wireless network services, and shortens recovery time after Windows Vista experiences a period of inactivity, among other fixes.
  • An update to USB core components: mainly affects systems returning from sleep or hibernation, fixing problems causing 1-2% of all crashes reported.
  • An update to Windows Media Center: among other things, affects interaction issues occurring between Media Center PC and Microsoft Xbox 360 when Xbox 360 is used as a Media Center Extender.

Take Windows Vista Compatibility, Reliability and Stability

Microsoft is offering Windows Vista users the means to take Windows Vista compatibility, reliability and stability up a notch ahead of the release of the first service pack for the operating system. In this context, the Redmond company has been hammering away at Vista, since the client hot the shelves in January 2007 with constant refreshes served through the Windows Update infrastructure. Although Windows Update is not yet a fully fledged substitute for the service pack release practice, Microsoft has hinted that small and incremental updates are the way of the future, in contrast to large and bloated refreshes.

Starting with its debut on the market, Vista has had quite a rough ride, experiencing a plethora of issues, mostly centered around software and hardware incompatibilities, as well as performance. (more…)

Vista Don’t Mix and Generate Errors

Microsoft has set up a comprehensive infrastructure for the delivery and deployment of updates targeting its Windows operating system. Although the company is not yet ready to abandon the practice of issuing service packs for its platforms, it has indicated that large refreshes are becoming less relevant, and on their way to be declared obsolete due to Windows Update. But at the same time, Windows Update is by no means a foolproof system. In fact, Microsoft indicated that under some circumstances, updates delivered via the service and Windows Vista will not mix, and generate a variety of issues.

This is why the Redmond company is offering two updates, addressing both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Vista. The BITS Repair Tool for Windows Vista is designed to resolve corruptions of the BITS state files. “After you download updates from Windows Updates on a Windows Vista-based computer, you may experience the following symptoms: (more…)
