Fix Black Screen of Death for XP SP3 and Vista SP1 Upgrades

Microsoft has warned end users that performing Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 upgrades from copies of XP SP2 and Vista RTM, respectively, that have Onekey Recovery 5.0 installed will cause the operating systems to display a black screen following reboot. According to the Redmond company, the issue is generated by an incompatibility between the two service pack releases and Saming OneKey recovery software driver Safnt.sys.

This means that deploying SP1 on top of Vista RTM, or SP3 on top of XP SP2, with Onekey Recovery 5.0 also installed, will result in a black screen of death. Microsoft revealed that this scenario would happen whether the service pack upgrade is performed from Windows Update or through any other method. "This issue occurs when the computer contains Onekey recovery software that is earlier than version 5.1. If the computer uses the Onekey recovery software version 5.1 or later versions, this issue does not occur," the company revealed, explaining that "Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP2 are incompatible with Onekey Recovery 5.0."

Users affected by the problem can access updates from Microsoft that will help them deal with the incompatibility. There are releases available for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista RTM and SP1, and only for the x86 variants of XP SP2 and SP3. Additionally, the software giant explained that in order "to avoid this issue, use one of the following methods: use the Windows Update Web site to install the hotfix before you upgrade the operating system or upgrade to the newer one-key recovery application before you upgrade the operating system."

New Round of Vista SP1 and XP SP3 Vulnerabilities

Microsoft is cooking patches for a new round of vulnerabilities impacting its Windows client and operating systems and Server software, including Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3.

The Redmond company is preparing no less than four security bulletins for release on July 8, 2008, two of them dealing with security flaws in Windows platforms and the remaining two in SQL and Exchange. However, since the release date is not until next week, Microsoft warned that its plans could change if something unexpected were to intervene, revealed Bill Sisk, Microsoft Security Response Center Communications Manager.

"As part of our regularly scheduled bulletin release, we’re currently planning to release four Microsoft Security Bulletins rated as Important. These updates may require a restart and will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. As we do each month, the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool will be updated. We are also planning to release high-priority, non-security updates on Windows Update and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) as well as high-priority, non-security updates on Microsoft Update and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)," Sisk added.

All four security bulletins have been labeled with a maximum severity rating of Important even though some vulnerabilities allow, in the eventuality of successful exploits, for remote code execution. In addition to Vista RTM/SP1 and XP SP2/SP3, Microsoft informed that the following products are also affected: Windows 2000 SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1/SP2, Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 7.0, SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0, Exchange Server 2003, and Exchange Server 2007. But given that none of the bulletins are designed to patch Critical vulnerabilities, the level of risk users are exposed to is not severe.

By the end of July, the Redmond company also plans to initiate the rollout of a refresh to the Windows Update infrastructure and client for Vista SP1 and XP SP3. However, Microsoft informed that serving the actual update would take a few months.

New Performance and Reliability Updates KB952709 for Vista SP1

A reliability and performance update KB952709 is available for download for Windows Vista Service Pack 1. This specific release targets all Windows Vista editions, provided that they have the first service pack integrated.

Two updates are up for grabs for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista SP1. "This update resolves issues that may affect some Windows Vista SP1-based computers. These issues have been reported by customers who use the Error Reporting service or Microsoft Customer Support Services," Microsoft informed.

According to Microsoft, "this update includes the following improvements on a Windows Vista SP1-based computer:

• This update improves the stability of Windows Vista SP1-based computers by addressing some crashes that may occur when you try to check e-mail by using a POP3 e-mail client such as Windows Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird. The crashes may occur on a Windows Vista SP1-based computer in the following scenario incoming POP3 and outgoing SMTP traffic monitoring is enabled.

• Both a third-party antivirus application and an antispyware application are installed, such as the following applications: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite by Check Point Software Technologies and SpySweeper by Webroot Software.

• This update improves the reliability of the Windows Vista SP1 based-computers by addressing some problems that occur when you delete user accounts by using the User Accounts item in Control Panel. When this problem occurs, the system may stop responding (hang).

• This update improves the reliability of Windows Vista SP1-based computers that experience issues in which large applications cannot run after the computer is turned on for extended periods of time. For example, when you try to start Excel 2007 after the computer is turned on for extended periods of time, a user may receive an error message that resembles the following: EXCEL.EXE is not a valid Win32 application

• This update improves the reliability of Windows Vista SP1-based computers by reducing the number of crashes that may be caused by the Apple QuickTime thumbnail preview in Windows Live Photo Gallery.

• This update improves the performance of Windows Vista SP1-based computers by reducing audio and video (AV) stuttering. Such AV stuttering may occur when the audio or video component is streaming high definition content from a Windows Vista SP1-based computer that has a NVIDIA network adapter nForce driver version 67.5.4.0 that is installed to a Windows Media Center Extender device."

RC versions of Windows Vista SP1 will expire on June 30 - Uninstall Now!

Tony Mann of Microsoft Forums remind everyone who installed the Release Candidate that you must uninstall any RC builds (any build less than 6.0.6001.18000) before they expire on June 30. After this date, the kernel will stop with an END_OF_NT_EVALUATION_PERIOD error message an hour after the machine has booted. If you do wait until after June 30, just reboot your PC and start the uninstall process right away.

How do you know if you’re running a pre-release build?

If your desktop says “For Evaluation Purposes”, you are running time-limited beta/RC software and will need to uninstall. Another check is to hit the start button and type “WinVer” – if it lists an expiration date then you have a time-limited version of SP1.

How do you uninstall pre-release versions of Vista SP1?

If you installed SP1 Beta/RC as an update to an existing RTM version of Vista, you can probably uninstall it directly. For instructions on how to uninstall SP1.

If you did a full install (a.k.a clean install) of SP1 from a DVD or network share, or updated an RTM version using the DVD to do an upgrade full install, there is no uninstall method; we recommend you back up your data, reformat, and start with an RTM DVD (and then install SP1) or a final SP1 integrated install DVD. While you may be able to force upgrade using a full install upgrade, this isn’t a recommended practice over the Beta or RC version of SP1.

Installing the final build of SP1 after the uninstall of the pre-release build

If you want to install the final SP1 build after uninstall is complete, first check Windows Update. If Windows Update offers you SP1, that’s the best way to install. If Windows update does not offer SP1 your computer may have one of the problematic drivers we have documented in KB948343. If you installed the Beta or RC builds, you probably dealt with this with already and it wasn’t a major issue. If you don’t see SP1 on Windows Update, you should visit the download center to install the standalone SP.
