Track the Weather on Mars with the Phoenix Mars Weather Gadget

You can get the latest weather (Maximum and Minimum temperatures per Sol or Martian Solar Day) on Mars from the Phoenix Mars Lander delivered to your desktop from the Phoenix lander currently on Mars.

Download: Phoenix Mars Weather Gadget

The Phoenix Mars Lander is a Martian lander (not a rover like Mars Pathfinder) designed to look for evidence of water or ice under the surface of Mars. Instead of roaming around the surface of Mars looking for water evidence - the Phoenix lander will dig below the surface to look for water or ice. Matter a fact, today the Phoenix Mission Team announced they may have found ice - aka frozen water! That's awesome.

The Phoenix Mars Weather Gadget is updated regularly as soon as the weather data is downloaded* from the Phoenix Mars Lander.

*In some cases due to technical reasons, weather data may not be available on a daily basis. For example: I believe today is Sol 25 but the Phoenix Mars Weather Gadget is reporting weather data from Sol 22.

You can get the latest on the Phoenix Mars Mission from their website here or the NASA website here.

Disable Low Disk Space Warning In Windows Vista

When your computer’s hard disk drive is nearly out of free space, Windows Vista will warn you with a little pop-up box at regular intervals. This Low disk space warning can be handy the first time but that’s usually where the usefulness stops.Aside from being annoying, Windows Vista’s constant check for low drive space uses system resources which can slow Windows down.

Follow the easy steps to turn off the low disk space checks in Windows Vista.

  • Click on Windows Vista Start, type in regedit in the start menu search box, and then hit the Enter key. This command will load the Windows Registry Editor program.

  • Locate the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder under Computer in the Windows Registry editor and navigate to the key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion.

  • Select the Policies key under CurrentVersion.

  • From the Windows Registry Editor menu, choose Edit-> New-> Key.

  • After the new key is created beneath Policies key, it will initially be named as New Key #1.
Change the name of the newly created registry key to Explorer and then hitting the Enter key.

  • With the newly created registry key, Explorer, still selected, choose Edit -> New-> DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  • After the

Bring the Summer to Your Desktop with a New Wallpaper!

I couple days ago I went outside and took some photos with my Nikon D40 (a Certified for Windows Vista camera) as the weather was very nice for taking some shots. I took a really neat close-up shot of a leaf with the sun shining from behind - highlighting the details of the leaf.

I am particularly fond of the shades of blue and green in the photo myself. I've been running it as a wallpaper on my own PCs and  thought it would make a great desktop wallpaper for readers here. So I've uploaded the wallpaper up to Windows Live SkyDrive in a variety of resolutions for all to download!

For other wallpapers - you can check out my Railroad Wallpaper I took in the Columbia River Gorge (here in the Pacific Northwest) and my Certified for Windows Vista Wallpaper.

Tune System Restore Feature in Windows Vista

There are mainly two important tweaks you can make to System Restore feature in Windows Vista: changing the size of the System Restore repository, and changing the System Restore schedule. The first tweak, changing the size of the System Restore repository in Vista affects how much disk space is set aside on any given disk for System Restore feature. The second tweak, changing the System Restore schedule in Vista affects how often System Restore feature runs in the background.

System Restore in Windows Vista has been designed to run as efficiently as it’s maximum. Still, on low end computer systems that don’t have as much spare data storage capacity like notebooks, or some computers that only have one hard drive having small size , things can slow down when System Restore feature kicks in. It is better in such a case is to set System Restore feature in Windows Vista to run a little less often or, on a non-critical computer system, disabling it entirely.

To change the amount of hard disk drive space set aside for System Restore feature in Windows Vista, you’ll need to edit that disk volume’s Shadow

Windows Vista Tips:Find Out What’s Hogging Your System

If your computer has sufficient system resources like RAM,Processor speed,Hard disk drive space,Graphic memory,Cache etc, Windows Vista should not be slow. If your computer runs slowly within these sufficient system resources,it is the indication that something is wrong with your computer, and you owe it to yourself to find out what is the problem. To that end, you need to do some system analysis and see where all of your CPU and I/O resources are going. Don’t guess in this stage; investigate and found. Sometimes the reason is surprisingly simple.

A very useful free tool to investigate such problems is Process Explorer utility. Download it from the link, unpack it into a directory somewhere in your user profile, and use it as your Windows Task Manager replacement. The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window of Process Explorer always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information about the process displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you’ll see the handles that the process selected in the top
