Guidance on Windows Deployments for Business Customers

Hi, I’m Gavriella; welcome to the new Windows for your Business Blog.

Let me introduce myself: I’m a member of the Windows Product Management team and have been at Microsoft for 13 years. For the last two and a half, I’ve been focused on product management for MDOP (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack). In my new role as Senior Director, I’m leading Product Management for Windows Client, including the Windows OS, the MDOP products, and the client virtualization strategy for our commercial customers. For us that means all customers from small businesses through large enterprises. My team and I are focused on helping optimize the desktop experience for our business customers - we focus on enabling end-user productivity and reducing desktop administration overhead.

Vista Tips - Multitab home pages in Internet Explorer 7

From older versions of Internet Explorer, you are familiar with the concept of having a home page, a Web site that is displayed when the web browser is loaded.

In Windows Vista, that classic browser feature has been mixed in with tabs. Now users can specify multiple Web sites to come up by default when they load Internet Explorer and can display them in different tabs.

Although this is not exactly a groundbreaking feature, it is a nice hidden feature that helps you customize your browser.
Using a multitab home page is easy when you know the secret.

Just follow these steps to set up your own multitab home page:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Tools, and then select Internet Options.
  3. When Internet Options loads, you will see the Home Page section at the top of the screen.
  4. To use multiple sites as your home pages, just enter each URL on a separate line.
  5. When you have finished, click OK to save your changes.
  6. Click the Home button to instantly see your changes.

Speed up Your Windows Vista Computer with ReadyBoost


In Windows Vista there is a new feature called ReadyBoost that lets you insert a flash drive or a memory card into the system then Windows will store the commonly used files for quicker access than turning off the hard drive. Mean it will create a Cache file to store the temporary files in the flash drive for serve you to open it again.

 
 

Turning this feature on is simple. Just put the flash drive, SD card, or whatever flash device you want into your computer. You’ll see this dialog pop up:

 
 


 
 

Click the “Speed up my system” link, and you’ll be taken to the ReadyBoost panel for the flash drive:

 
 


 
 

Just select Use this device, and set the amount of space you want to use. Windows will create what is essentially a paging file on the disk, and will use it for faster access.

 
 

You will see a cache file in ur flash drive as below:

Vista Tips - Enabling Aero Glass on Slower Hardware

Aero Glass can be resource intensive depending on your CPU, amount of RAM, and screen resolution. On top of the speed of your hardware, the DWM (Desktop Window Manager) has strict hardware requirements, such as a video card that supports DirectX 9 hardware acceleration and Pixel Shader 2.0 support. It also requires new Windows Vista WDDM (Windows display driver model) video drivers to function.

Failure to meet the hardware and driver requirements will result in no Glass for you. Back in the beta days, you could trick the DWM into running Glass in a software Direct3D emulation mode and bypassing the hardware checks. This made it possible to run Glass, but so poorly that the operating system was pretty much useless because the frame rate was less than one frame per second. In the final version of Windows Vista, that support was yanked, so you are left with the task of meeting the hardware and driver requirements to run Glass.
