Windows Vista SP1 Causing Internet Connection Problems

On a Dell Precision 670 (@work), updated to Vista SP1, and a new Dell Inspiron 530 (@friend) with Vista SP1 installed on it when it was received, I have been having issues using the Internet.  Every time I restart my computer, my Internet connection won’t work even though the globe indicator on the network connection icon is showing as being online.  I can browse my local network but I can’t do anything online.  I found that I could temporarily get around this by disabling and re-enabling the Local Area Connection.  However, I wanted a more permanent solution:

Disabling IPv6 on Windows Vista SP1

Option 1:

  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Once the Control Panel is open, click the Classic View link on the left sidebar.
  4. Find and double-click Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Click Manage Network Connections on the left sidebar.
  6. Find your Broadband connection (usually named Local Area Connection) and right-click on it.
  7. On the context-menu, click Properties.
  8. Click the Networking tab.
  9. Remove the checkmark from Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  10. Click Ok.
  11. Close all the windows opened in the previous steps.
  12. Restart your computer.

Option 2 (requires modifying the registry but allows you to change one setting to affect all network adapters):

  1. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - KB929852 - How to disable certain Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) components in Windows Vista

Known Issues with disabling IPv6:

  1. Any programs that require IPv6 will not work.  One example is Windows Meeting Space:

Hopefully Microsoft gets this issue fixed soon as I hate workarounds, especially ones that make compromises.  Though we all know that workarounds are a necessity of the digital life.

Thanks for this. I have a DELL XPS 410 and had the same problems after upgrading to VISTA SP1 so I tried your solution and it works! I have had to do so many system restores and reinstalls with Vista I thought the system had corrupted itself, but it turns out to be a bug. Is it isolated to just DELL systems?

I’m going bonkers with this failing internet connection. Strange thing is… i do not remember these problems occurring the moment i started using Vista. Got my Vista system last december, in my memory, problems started only in may .
Nevertheless… i will try and see what happens. If this fails too, as a last resort, i will re-install Vista.

Ya Jimmyz it might be just dell systems for this paticular problem. Mine is a dell vostro 1400 and it has the exact same problem, the globe thing shows in the network icon that I have a connection to the internet but I still couldnt connect.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Vista Home Premium SP1, and out of the box it had difficulty connection to the internet through my wireless home network, even thoough the wireless card showed a strong connection to the router and a strong signal.

Most of the time, it would take forever for the internet connection to be established, and most of the time I had to manually press the “diagnose the internet connection” button over and over to get it to connect a bit faster.

I disabled IPv6 per the instructions in Option 1. My internet connection is now instant upon bootup, just like my Windowes XPS computers are! This solution works, and every Dell technician and Microsoft technician should review this and try this solution with their clients!

Thank you much for this idea. It needs to be shared very widely.

I have new out of the box Inspiron 1525, wireless web page download was useless. Tried option 1 which increased performance dramatically but still not acceptable enough for a new system. Will probably return system. Spent 1.5 hours trying to speak with technician tonight. Gave up after 90 minutes of wait time.

Had to uninstall MacFee software that came pre-installed on laptop. It worked much better after that, but now I need to find AV software that works well on Vista SP1. I’m hesitant to upgrade to SP2. Any thoughts about AV software and installing SP2? Thanks
